UNOPS Japan Microsite

UNOPS Japan identified a need to integrate a microsite as part of their overall communication toolbox. The goal of the site was to raise awareness of the projects the government of Japan is supporting through UNOPS initiatives.

I worked with the UNOPS Japan team to establish a mood for the microsite that represented the Japanese culture through color and typography. I really enjoyed this project, it was one of my first with UNOPS, and provided the opportunity to utlize color theory and typography in an intimate way.

Once the site design was approved, I coordinated with their development team to assemble the necessary assets and CSS rules.

The Moods

UNOPS Japan put a great empahsis on chosing a color palette that complimented UNOPS brand, but also represented the Japanese culture. Color has great meaning in Japan and it was imperitive we crafted a color scheme that communicated the correct message to their users.

The first mood board was based of the colors of cherry blossom trees. The cherry blossom is a symbol of the spring, a time of renewal, and the fleeting nature of life. The vibrant pink of cherry blossom flowers symbolize love and affection.

The second mood board was inspired by shinto shrines which are important buildings in Japan used for the safekeeping of sacred objects, and not for worship. The vermillion colored door that welcomes all visitors to every shinto shrine symbolizes the powers of the kami, the protective power.
